Call it bias, as I really and truly enjoyed the film as I saw it in theaters, but this ending shown here ruins the film for me. Creepy story based on the short story from Steven King.

I felt the acting and cinematography in the film was excellent. The projected images of older times in black and white displaying previous tenants jumping from the building was a bit much as it seemed to connected to that being portrayed from a television set.

I liked the deviation of the story from the original story and it did a great job of portraying the lead as a prisoner.

I was a bit disappointed in the ending, however, as it was! I found that disappointing in that it appeared that the producers of the film attempted to make it some how more unsettling, but I found the original ending much more clever.

I had no idea the ending of this rental version had been changed on this version from the one I saw in the theater, and in previous cable runs.

Thought I had lost my mind Then we looked the movie up on wikipedia and found out about the various endings King's greatest talent is creating complex, three-dimensional characters, and special effects can't compensate for a failure to live up to that ideal.

Cusack is magnificent, and considering about half the film is. The two complement each other so well. My students invariably like this film a great deal.

The short story this movie is based on is one of King's best. A movie adaptation held high promise, and friends gathered upon my enthusiastic recommendation to watch.

The movie begins interestingly enough, with the threat of supernatural violence hanging in the air above a skeptical, believable author.

The two principal actors do a great job with their roles. After what seems like four hours of viewing special effects and really, truly odd "threatening" illusionary scenes, all those viewing this flic in my living room kept hoping for an ending.

All the cinematic special effects are here: there's Hitchcock's zoom scene lifted from Vertigo, there's the rapid cuts from hundreds of scary movies.

Not a bad film to show to a class of cinema students who are interested in learning the craft. A brief beach scene seemed to indicate some conclusion.

When the movie shifted back to yet additional scenes in the "silly room" which is how my friends were referring to it, at this point , everyone but me left for more productive pursuits.

Other reviews expressed disappointment with the ending; I was relieved just to get to it. Any ending at all would have been welcome after the "tortures and tribulations.

It's been a long time, and many a movie, since I last welcomed an ending with the thought that "I stuck through it I actually made it! Sadly, , perhaps the best short story of them all, did not.

Bottomline advice: enjoy the book. One person found this helpful. This is a must-watch for horror-thriller fans.

It may not be all the way up there with The Shining, but this is definitely one of the best Stephen King film adaptations I've ever seen.

I'd never watched a John Cusack movie before this, and his acting is absolutely pitch-perfect which it needs to be, since he's alone onscreen for most of the movie.

In other words, it's one of those truly scary movies that also happens to be artfully written and produced. I actually liked the film more than the original short story.

I do prefer the theatrical ending over the director's cut, which is what you're getting here, but both radically different endings have their pros and cons.

However Mike threatens Mr. Olin, promising to sue the hotel, and is finally allowed to check into the room. Later in the night, he finds that guests of room , once they have checked in, might never leave the room alive.

Author Mike Enslin specializes in paranormal investigations writing books along the line of the 10 best haunted hotels in America and so on. He receives an anonymous postcard in the mail telling him not to stay in room at the Dolphin Hotel in New York City.

His attempts to make a reservation there are unsuccessful and he is told that it isn't available - ever. His research reveals that there have been a number of very strange deaths in that room dating as far back as the hotel's opening 95 years ago.

The hotel is forced to accept him but the manager, Gerald Olin, begs him not to stay there. In his opinion, the room is evil and no one has ever been able to stay in there for more than an hour.

Enslin scoffs at the warning and is soon in the room - from which he soon becomes desperate to leave. Hacked off with his miserable life, the quasi-successful author of spine-chilling ghost stories, Mike Enslin, makes a living debunking supernatural events by visiting sites of reported paranormal activity.

Profoundly cynical, Enslin receives an anonymous postcard warning him not to check into the mysterious room of Manhattan's Dolphin Hotel, of course, only to spark his suspicious interest.
